Great Victory
On May 9, 2020, Russia and all progressive humankind will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War.
Throughout our history, the Russian people have undergone considerable challenges but the Great Patriotic War in its scope, destruction and number of human victims had no peers in the entire history of humanity. That is why our Victory is so significant!
The Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 lasted 1418 days and nights. This tragedy touched every family and heart of every Soviet person. More than 27 million citizens of the USSR died during the Great Patriotic War. This catastrophe affected absolutely every Russian. Many people died from starvation, bombing, shelling, harsh living and working conditions. In these difficult years, soldiers, ordinary people, children made heroic deeds to save the lives of others by scarifying theirs and anticipating the victory. The entire population of Russia and the former Soviet republics has been recalling these terrible events for 75 years. This great date we remember with deep respect and reverence for our ancestors who fought for our Motherland against fascist Germany and its minions.
Every year, less and less participants and witnesses of those terrible events remain. The whole Soviet people, young and old, fought a fierce struggle with the Nazis: some of them fought on the battlefields, some worked hard in the home front for 20 hours a day sparing no effort, bringing the Great Victory closer. But we remember each and every one of them and will do everything in our power so that future generations also know the truth about the Great feat of our ancestors.
In modern society, in the world of information technology where it is easy to substitute the concepts of conscience, honor and dignity, it is easy to distort and minimize the feat of the Soviet people, it is easy to rewrite the history and achievements of our ancestors - our task is to prevent this. More importantly - to make sure that those terrible events are not repeated.
It should be noted that Soviet diplomacy also contributed to the achievement of the Great Victory. The workers of the People’s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs (PCFA) not only worked selflessly in the diplomatic field. On July 5, 1941, that is 12 days after the outbreak of the war, half of all PCFA employees as part of the people's militia voluntarily went to the front. They took their first battle near Yelnya, where they showed courage and bravery. Out of 163 people of the militia 72 remained in the soil of the Smolensk region forever.
I was born 15 years after the Great Victory. I distinctly remember my fellow villagers, teachers-veterans of the Great Patriotic War without legs, arms teaching us lessons. I remember my parents-participants of the Great Patriotic War - disabled father and mother - holder of “Order for the Defense of the Caucasus”. I have never seen my grandfather who had not returned from the war. In my meetings with fellow diplomats, they sometimes ask me “can we all try to forget about that terrible time, Russia pays a lot of attention to this date”. I want to say once again not only to my colleagues but also to everyone that Russia will never forget this war, fathers, and mothers. Russia will always remember those who sacrificed their lives so that contemporaries live peacefully and freely.
For us the memory of that terrible war is a reminder that each day we work for the benefit of Homeland and do not give anyone a reason to repeat those terrible pages of our history.
On this Great Day, I want to congratulate all veterans of the war and the home front on the occasion of Victory Day, the victory of good over evil, wish them good health and assure them that we, the current generation, will exert all our strength and skills to be called your worthy descendants.
